Super Bowl Outcome Will Not Affect Prices This Week

Comment on the February 1 prediction: Just like the January 20 prediction, prices rose to $2.99 in Indiana, but again WRONG in Michigan, as they continue to sell gas at a nice discount here.

Sunday, February 8, 2026, 1 PM: And as I followed up on January 26, doubling down on a prediction of reset, I am doing it again, expecting prices to rise tomorrow or Tuesday to $2.99 or higher. Nothing has changed, wholesale-wise. I filled up again yesterday for $2.53 and might top off my tank on Monday morning.

Why 2026 so far has featured consumer-friendly pricing in Michigan is a mystery to me, particularly compared to my griping in 2024 and 2025 about aggressive retail pricing (for example, last September). I have theories without solid evidence (e.g., Big Red or Marathon aggressive guy got promoted out of the price-setting job; hidden economic weakness in Michigan is affecting gas station sales; the new Michigan gas tax law has confused pricing; right-leaning price-setters were trying to embarrass the previous administration and then took a while to stop themselves), but let’s enjoy these times while we can. I will continue to collect data and monitor. -EA

  1. I haven’t been keeping track, but with the SpikeLine being wonky, and it camping out around the low prices, my guess is there’s a refinery somewhere going through maintenance pushing Indiana prices higher than Michigan’s. Michigan’s SpikeLine also may need readjusting for the new taxes.
