Where There Used To Be More Gas Price Competition

Comment on the January 20 prediction: CORRECT in Indiana, as prices reset to $2.99 last week. WRONG in Michigan, as they gave us a break during a rough week of weather.

Monday, January 26, 2026, 1 PM: Sunday, I filled up for $2.62 on Cascade Rd., while prices were still in the $2.90’s along Lake Michigan Drive. Despite six stations in a three-mile stretch of LMD, they have settled into a higher-prices-are-better equilibrium. That was not always true. Perhaps the increase in traffic along that route over the years, meaning an increase in demand for gasoline, has led to that equilibrium. But it makes it harder to play the Gas Game.

Current data has been stable all month, suggesting that if there is a reset, the new price is in the $2.99 to $3.19 range. It is the “if” that’s the challenge. I thought a hike would be triggered last week. I expect it this week. -EA

  1. $2.43 Daleville Indiana. New Wawa and Quik Trip have kept prices consistently lower than other nearby areas since last spring.
