Comment on the August 8 prediction: On Wednesday morning (August 12), I was planning to write a new post predicting a hike for later Wednesday or Thursday. But Big Red was three steps ahead of me and initiated a hike on Tuesday night. That hike has been broadly embraced in Michigan. I am going to score “I don’t think … inspire a hike early in the week” as WRONG. But, I won the Gas Game by filling up for $3.95 in Standale, after seeing Big Red’s overnight hike.
Friday, August 14, 2026, 11 AM: We are back to $4.39 in Michigan, after a jump in oil prices on Monday, and VLO continues to soar. But historically, summer gas prices top out in August. For example, last year there was a hike on August 25 that led to the highest price for that summer, $3.49, for which I feel nostalgia. We should see gas prices sliding slowly for the next week, as I am not expecting any dramatic news out of Iran. -EA
