Refineries and August: Mixing Like Oil and Water

Refineries and August: Mixing Like Oil and Water

Comment on the August 17 prediction: WRONG, as prices reset (yet again) to $3.39, this time on Tuesday.

Friday, August 22, 2025, 2 PM: I don’t know if Tuesday’s price reset was because of issues at our key refinery in Whiting, Indiana, or just a coincidence. Either way, we have been thwarted again in getting that Midwestern average under $3. The hike was more “shallow” than “powerful”, with some stations waiting until the next day, and this morning I have already seen prices below $3.29 at several stations. In my opinion, it is unlikely that there is a second hike above $3.39 in the next few days.

Refinery troubles reduce supply, which causes price spikes. Looking over my old postings, I see we have had July or August refinery issues in 2024, 2023, and 2022, each which kept gas prices elevated at the end of the summer. How about a no-refinery-issues-summer-2026 project? -EA

  1. Seen Shell in Dent near I74 in Cincinnati West Side at $3.499. Most stations are $2.899 to about $3.099 but that will be changing.

Filled up immediately at UDF in Dent for $2.839 including the 6 cent member discount.

  2. No hike at all in Chicagoland this week, even though the “numbers” pointed strongly to one. Sometimes Speedway’s decisions defy my understanding. I do suspect Monday will bring a reset to $3.79. Most Speedways over here are 30-60c below that. We are only a month or so from the start of transition to winter blend.

  3. South Bend IN – yesterday $3.49, led by Speedway here also along with Family Express & some others. Plenty with no change yet. Costco $2.98.

  4. Several $3.49s in Anderson Indiana. Daleville Indiana still having a price war at 7 locations. Loving Quick Trip and Wawa building new stations. Got me lazy shopping for the best price for the last several months.

  5. At least 3.49 in Grand Rapids was a weak hike. Was still able to find 3.19 in Wyoming/Kentwood during much of the week. Even Maverik was 3.09 for a while.
