Comment on the August 21 prediction: Michigan continued to enjoy lower gas prices than Indiana and other Midwestern states. My prediction was WRONG.
Sunday, August 28, 2022, 5PM: You may have heard that this past Wednesday, the major gasoline refinery in Whiting, Indiana shut down due to an electrical fire. Then, on Friday, a “Regional Emergency Declaration” was declared, and here in Michigan, Governor Whitmer followed up by issuing an order to waive some fuel transportation rules. What does this mean for gas prices?
The answer is unclear. As of this writing Sunday afternoon, you can still find gas below $3.50, such as $3.45 in Plainwell, south of Grand Rapids. Chicago wholesale prices didn’t do much late in the week either, hovering around $3 a gallon.
As my Michigan-to-$3.99 predictions this month have been without merit, I’m not sure I want to stick out my neck a third Sunday in a row. But, on the safe side, I suggest you fill up tonight or tomorrow morning. Keep an eye on our gas buddy’s twitter feed for updates. -EA
