Not Worried About Venezuela, Iran

Comment on the December 28, 2025, prediction: Prices rose to $2.99 on December 31 … in Indiana, but for Michigan, which was the focus of the prediction, they waited until Monday, January 5, and it took more than a day to spread around. I have to grade this one as WRONG.

Sunday, January 11, 2026, 5 PM: Happy New Year! Now that we have moved to January, the new Michigan gas tax is in effect, and calendar-wise, gas prices tend to rise from January to June.

Will that happen again this year? That depends on what kind of volatility emerges in oil prices. I think that the current adventure in Venezuela will be a nothing burger for oil and gas prices. I’m not convinced that the unrest in Iran this weekend is a big deal, either. There are speculators out there studying the voodoo of chart analysis, and one dude expects oil prices to explode over $300 a barrel at some point.

For now, though, oil is up a few dollars a barrel since mid-December, while wholesale gas prices haven’t changed much. I filled up for $2.54 this morning, and we have a wide enough spread of retail prices that I suspect we’ll get a reset back to $2.99 again this week. -EA

  1. Lowball hike to $2.89 in Illinois last week. With wholesale close to steady and much of this last hike rolled back, wouldn’t be surprised if they try again 20c higher this week.
