Sunday, November 24, 2024, 11 AM: I feel like I won the Gas Game this morning, filling up in the low $2.70’s near the ballpark in Grand Rapids. In the past week, wholesale prices have ticked up a bit, but the retailers kept their price-hike-loving fingers at bay. I don’t think that we will be so lucky on Monday or Tuesday, with the holiday travel week upon us. The question is what is the new price? If the inflated margin scheme continues, we are back to $3.29 again. If old-school margins return, then $2.99 would be the prediction. So, somewhere in between $2.99 and $3.29 it is. Fill those tanks today. -EA
Thanks Ed, filled up this morning using 40c of Kroger points for $2.279.
Big Red is making the jump this morning. 3.199 is the new price in Ohio. Paid $2.37 yesterday.
Yep, Big Red in Indy area hiking to $3.299.
Hikes of up to 75c in NE IL as Speedway sets the holiday price to $3.59/3.69
Another increase in NW Indiana, to match the $3.29 every where else.
$3.29 holiday gougeathon in Yorktown Indiana
14c drop in wholesale last evening after Speedway’s already near record greedy hike!!
South Central Ky still has prices in the $2.40s-$2.60s. I should probably go fill everything up this morning.
@BTC – I know once you get around London KY on I-75, not many Speedways. Probably has a lot to do with it, as I’m sure you know..
Went to $3.199 last Monday or Tuesday in Toledo.
So much for not gouging for a holiday. That was a $0.60/gallon spike, if memory serves.
@ChrisDG74 – I traveled from Lansing to Bowling Green Ky for Thanksgiving, so along the I-69/I-65 corridor. There are definitely some Speedways down here. I noticed large variances in prices the entire trip. It seems like some places never spiked, while others did. There were places along the way that were $2.69-$2.79 while many others were well over $3. Going by what I’m seeing on GasBuddy, prices down here seem to be trending lower.
Something off topic, which I had not noticed until recently, is that at least in Ky you can redeem Kroger points until the price per gallon hits 1 cent. That might require some manual intervention, but I had enough points for about $3.20 in discounts and got 35 gallons for approximately $3.50. The price at the pump was $2.69, I selected my November points and it dropped the price down to $0.099. I’m not sure why it didn’t go down to 1 cent. Anyway, it’s not like that in Michigan. You can only redeem up to $1 worth of points at a time, which is kind of a bummer. Maybe there has been a change in the fuel points policy down here because I think it used to $1 max as well. On Kroger’s website, you will notice a change in the language depending upon the store location.
Speedway rolled out a new app today which took away the ability to display large numbers of IL stations to get a sense of their average & range. Gasbuddy has been not useful for a while since the new site was rolled out since there are about 100 stations I’ve been tracking and the limit is now 15 and you can’t even specify Speedway brand. Not to mention that prices via the Gasbuddy web site do not reflect the big jumps and drops that the app accepts. My close to 20 years of trying to predict their hikes seems to be coming to dead end. Unless anyone reading this knows something I am missing.
James – I agree 100% with what you mentioned. It’s been hard for me to keep track of Indiana and Gary, Indiana average. Fuel insight chart on Gasbuddy is the only way I have. Definitely would miss your posts on Reddit as it is helpful with the RBOB info. Not sure what can be done though.
Withholding information keeps everyone out of the loop. We need a new crowd sourced gas prices web page.
