Comparing Ukraine’s price hikes with Iran’s

Comment on the April 28 prediction: “Another hike is coming” was an understatement — we had three hikes: $3.99 -> $4.29 -> $4.79 -> $4.99. The prediction was CORRECT.

Sunday, May 3, 2026, 7 PM: The gas price madness of last week brought me back to 2022, when we had two different price hike runs caused by the beginning of the Ukraine-Russian war. In February that year, within two weeks, we saw $3.33 -> $3.49 -> $3.59 -> $3.79 -> $3.89 -> $4.25. Then, at the end of May, there were three hikes the same week, from $4.57 -> $4.79 -> $4.99 -> $5.19, which is the highest price I have ever recorded in west Michigan.

I think we’ll match that price this week, or even higher. I am not seeing any backtracking on oil prices this evening, and my favorite Costco is now up to $4.87 a gallon. Price hikes end up around 50 cents higher than Costco. In addition, I spotted $5.09 at a Marathon on Alpine Avenue on Friday, although they backed off this weekend, which suggests retailers are ready to go over $5. I will fill up Monday morning. -EA

  1. Indiana Governor extended the gas tax holiday another 30 days. This time it includes the state excise tax as well as 7% sales tax. Around 59¢ at current prices would be the normal Indiana state taxes on gasoline. $3.93 in Daleville Indiana today.
