Comment on the July 19 prediction: Prices rose to $4.39 in Michigan on July 21, so the prediction was CORRECT.
Saturday, August 1, 2026, 4 PM: As you know, gas prices crept higher in July, with hikes to $4.29, $4.39, and then last Wednesday, $4.49. That last hike I almost posted a prediction for, but here was my thinking. Indications at the close of trading on Friday the 24th were that a move to $4.49 was in the cards. But the U.S. was playing another game of war-and-peace with Iran, and things were murky on Monday as energy prices started dropping. It was a turn higher late Tuesday that led to Wednesday’s hike.
For August in Michigan, I expect prices to remain elevated, and we might see $4.59 or $4.69, although no data suggests a price hike is imminent early in the week. In Indiana, however, the gas tax holiday they have enjoyed this summer is ending. Hoosiers are looking at a 60-cent super hike on Friday the 7th, unless some stations decide to price it in early. The new prices will be comparable to what Michiganders and Ohioans are “enjoying”.-EA

Sadly, Michigan has some of the highest gas prices nationwide.
I drove from Michigan to Arizona and back; other than a couple of stations in the middle of nowhere, Michigan, with its 4.19+ a gallon, was even higher than Illinois. Several stations in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas were in the low 3’s.
Indiana Governor Braun extended the gas tax holiday another 30 days. He says he could possibly extend the tax holiday another 120 days and is evaluating the situation every 30 days. This Hoosier is happy.
Looks like the Indiana gas tax holiday has been extended.
