On the Road to East Lansing

Comment on the March 15 prediction: Absolutely CORRECT, as prices rose everywhere in Michigan to $3.99 the next day. Diesel landed at $4.99 a gallon.

Sunday, March 22, 2026, 9 PM: This morning, I drove from Grand Rapids to East Lansing to run in the MSU Tower Guard Shamrock 5K. Along the way, I was noting gas and diesel prices along I-96. Gas had dipped just slightly since Monday’s hike, with prices mostly in the low $3.90’s. Diesel, on the other hand, was up another 10%, to around $5.49 a gallon, at truck stops near the I-96/I-69/Grand River Avenue interchange. That’s not a good sign.

Oil bounced around a lot last week, but closed Friday over $98, which is also where it was the previous Friday. At the moment, on Sunday night, that price has changed very little since Friday. I don’t have a solid read on gasoline wholesale prices this evening, although the nearly 6% jump in the UGA fund on Friday is disturbing. (Yes, you can buy and sell securities tagged to the price of gasoline!) And I am troubled to see that my local Costco charged $3.84 today for a gallon of gas, because Costco’s price is usually a good proxy for the 0-cent margin price.

I think there is a realistic chance we will see $4.09 – $4.29 this week in Michigan. That’s a prediction. -EA
