No Fun November for Gas Prices

No Fun November for Gas Prices

Comment on the October 26 prediction: That was two weeks ago, and it was CORRECT. Prices reset to $3.29 on Monday, the 3rd.

Sunday, November 9, 2025, 5 PM: In a typical year, gas prices work their way lower from August until December. This year seemed to follow the pattern until mid-October, when the very important refinery near Chicago dealt with its latest fire. (And there is a report from October on what the Whiting community deals with when there is a fire.) Supply dropped, wholesale prices rose, and we were back at $3.29 in Michigan. After a retail price head fake down to $3, we were back to $3.29 this past Monday.

A troubling sign of the current state of gasoline prices is that the Costco that I follow in Grand Rapids has slowly but surely been raising prices from $2.46 on October 17 up to $2.89 this evening. This year, post-hike prices have been running 50 to 60 cents higher than Costco, so that would be $3.39 to $3.49. Just the fact that I am speculating on a new price like this tells me that we will be seeing a reset this week.

Note: Also, in mid-October, a change in the gas tax law in Michigan was signed by Governor Whitmer. However, that change doesn’t go into effect until the new year and doesn’t explain what is happening right now. -Ed A.
