Diesel Prices Move Into Insane Territory

Diesel Prices Move Into Insane Territory

Comment on the May 3 prediction: Despite a confluence of factors a week ago that would have justified a hike above $5, it did not happen. The prediction was WRONG.

Sunday, May 10, 2026, 5 PM: After a weekend mini-vacation near New Buffalo, Michigan, I noticed along I-196 that diesel was selling for over … drumroll please … $7 a gallon. That’s insane. But diesel prices are more immediately tied to oil prices than gas prices are. And you know, oil has been hovering around $100 for a few weeks.

Diesel soaring, so gas prices should follow. Like tomorrow, as our GasBuddy friend predicted this weekend. I will second that prediction and fill up first thing tomorrow. Back to $4.99? Or higher?

(Meanwhile, in Indiana, the state gas tax has been suspended.) -EA
