Comment on the June 21 prediction: CORRECT, as prices rose the next day, all the way to $4.29. Then, several days later, there seemed to be a phantom reset to $4.19, but that didn’t amount to anything.
Sunday, July 5, 2026, 3 PM: I hope everyone had some time to have fun and/or relax over this holiday weekend. Time to get back into the Gas Game.
Around west Michigan, prices have mostly dropped below $4 … actually, there are a lot of $3.999’s around today. Will it last, or will there be yet another reset to $4.19 – $4.29? The “it will last” camp can point to oil remaining below $70 a barrel and wholesale gas prices in the Midwest at the lowest they have been for months. And are hostilities with Iran done? The “back above $4 camp” notes the Costco/Sam’s Club combo, an excellent proxy for the 0-cent margin price, has been ticking upward for more than a week, from $3.72 to $3.94 today, and the Speedways and Marathons seem to be grudgingly moving their prices to $3.99. That suggests healthy summer demand for gasoline.
I see prices in the $3.50’s in Grand Haven, so my prediction for the week is that one of two things will happen. Either the rest of the region starts dropping prices quickly by 25 to 40 cents (with the holiday weekend over) or Costco is telling us something, and we’ll see $4.29 everywhere in the next few days. So the prediction is to see price volatility. -EA
