Gas Price Joy in Indiana

Gas Price Joy in Indiana

Comment on the May 31 prediction: Yes, prices kept falling toward $4 and below last week, so the prediction was CORRECT.

Tuesday, June 9, 2026, 9 AM: At some point, they were going to reset prices, and yesterday they did so, with a new price of $4.39 spreading around Michigan. For the most part, that meant a hike, but there were still some stations above $4.39 on Sunday. Looking at my calculations in retrospect, the hike made sense, with a 0-cent margin price in the $3.80’s.

I was in Chicago last weekend, which meant driving through Indiana, the home of the temporary gas tax pause, and I got to fill up for $3.19, somewhere along I-94. It was jarring to return to Michigan on Sunday afternoon and see prices a dollar higher per gallon.

Looking ahead, oil prices appear to have stabilized for now around $90 a barrel, which would correspond to a $3.89 – $4.39 range for gas prices in Michigan. Unless we get some market-moving news out of the Middle East, we’ll play the slow-drop-the-quick-rise game in that range for a while. -EA
